How much EV charging can your site support?

EV chargers can place significant additional demand on a property’s electrical supply, particularly when several vehicles charge simultaneously.

The amount of charging your site can support depends on its electrical supply, existing building demand, parking durations, vehicle requirements and plans for future expansion. Simply connecting every charger at its maximum output may overload the electrical infrastructure or lead to unnecessary upgrade costs.

A properly designed load management system controls charging demand so that available power can be distributed safely and effectively.

What is EV charging load management?

EV charging load management controls the total amount of power allocated to a charging installation and distributes it across the connected vehicles.

When electrical capacity is limited, charger output can be reduced or temporarily paused. As more power becomes available, charging output can increase automatically.

Load management does not increase your site’s electrical capacity. It allows the available capacity to be used more effectively while helping protect the building’s electrical supply.

Static and dynamic load management

Static load management

Static load management establishes a fixed amount of electrical capacity for the charging system. The connected chargers share this allocation without exceeding the predetermined limit.
This may be suitable where sufficient electrical capacity can be permanently dedicated to EV charging.

Dynamic load management

Dynamic load management uses a power meter to monitor the property’s electricity demand in real time.
When building demand increases, the power available to the chargers is reduced. When building demand falls, additional power can be made available for vehicle charging.
This is particularly useful for properties with variable electrical demand or limited spare capacity.
We assess each property individually to determine whether static or dynamic load management—or a combination of both—is appropriate.

EcoStruxure EV charging expert

Charging EVolution supplies and installs Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure EV Charging Expert, an intelligent controller designed specifically for EV charging infrastructure.

The system can manage how available power is distributed between chargers, electrical zones and connected vehicles. Charging priorities can also be assigned to selected users or vehicles, such as fleet vehicles, emergency vehicles or essential staff.

Power can be shared between residents while protecting the building’s common electrical supply. The system can also support staged expansion as more residents purchase electric vehicles.

Charging demand can be managed alongside lighting, air conditioning, machinery and other building loads without unnecessarily increasing the property’s maximum demand.

Fleet depots
Available power can be distributed across fleet vehicles, with priority given to vehicles that must be ready for specific operational requirements.

Hospitality and destination venues
Hotels, wineries, accommodation providers and other destinations can offer EV charging while managing demand alongside their existing business operations.

We begin by taking the time to understand how charging will be used at your property, including vehicle types, parking durations, access requirements, charging priorities and plans for future expansion. Your budget is considered from the outset.

Where required, we can undertake electrical data logging to establish an accurate picture of the site’s available capacity and demand profile.

Designing the system

Based on our findings, we recommend the appropriate charging equipment, electrical infrastructure and load management strategy.
Our proposal clearly outlines the recommended solution, associated electrical works and project costs.

Installation and commissioning

Our in-house electrical team manages the installation and commissioning from start to finish. We are experienced in working in live environments and plan our work carefully to minimise disruption.
The completed system is tested, configured and commissioned to meet the project requirements and applicable Australian Standards.

Frequently asked questions

No. If sufficient electrical capacity can be permanently allocated to the chargers, a dedicated supply or basic static control may be sufficient. We determine this during the site assessment.

In some cases, yes. Dynamic load management may allow EV charging to operate within the property’s existing supply capacity. However, this depends on the site’s electrical infrastructure and charging requirements and cannot be guaranteed without an assessment.

Charging output may be temporarily reduced when building demand is high or several vehicles are charging simultaneously. The system increases charging output when more capacity becomes available.
We consider parking duration and vehicle requirements when designing the system so that charging performance remains practical for users.

Yes. Charging priorities can be configured for selected users or vehicles, making this useful for fleets, essential staff and other operational requirements.

Yes, provided future expansion is considered during the initial design. Switchboard capacity, submains, communications cabling, conduits and load management licensing should all be considered at the outset.
